Permits for external doors: what you need to know
When you buy a new exterior facade want to have it installed, it is wise to first check whether there is a licence needed. This is because an external façade changes the appearance of a house or property. That is why installing a facade sometimes falls under the rules of the municipality. By being clear about permits in advance, you can avoid surprises.

When is a permit required?
Especially for monuments, buildings in a protected townscape or when you make major alterations to the facade, stricter rules often apply. Municipalities, which are responsible for them, want to protect the original look and character of the area in such cases.
Applying for a permit is almost always mandatory in these situations. The requirements often differ from one municipality to another. It is therefore wise to contact the municipality at an early stage so that you know what conditions apply in your situation.
When can you build without a permit?
An external façade is installed without a permit in some cases, such as when you replace an existing façade with a new one. Your new exterior facade, for example made of aluminium or steel, should then have exactly the same dimensions and appearance.
Because in this case there is no change in size, style or construction of the facade, this often falls under regular maintenance. Modifications to the rear of a house, which are not visible from the public road, are also usually assessed less strictly. Nevertheless, it is still important to always discuss your building plans with the municipality beforehand. You can then be sure that you are not taking any unnecessary risks. Then you will start installing without any problems.
Specific concerns for steel and aluminium external doors
Steel and aluminium external facades by Aluwdoors are always fully customised. This means that sometimes major rebuilding is required and that the façade usually matches the existing situation.
Because the customisation is tailored exactly to the dimensions and style of your façade, it preserves the building's appearance and complies with applicable regulations. So you create a new, durable façade without the need for major modifications.

How do you apply for a licence?
Applying for a permit is simple. First do the permit check in the Omgevingsloket and consult with your municipality if you live or work in a national monument or if you are making facade changes. Then follow these steps:
- Schedule a preliminary consultation: Briefly discuss your plan with sketch, photos and material description.
- Have drawings made: Submit site drawing, facade views and details of profile and glass.
- Add specifications: Specify material, colour, glass thickness and finish.
- Submit your application: Upload all documents in the Environment Counter portal and pay the fees.
- Wait for the decision: The municipality assesses, after agreement the new facade can be installed to size.
Cost and processing time of a permit application
When you apply for a permit for your external facade, among other things, you almost always pay fees to the municipality. What you have to pay varies from one municipality to another. It often depends on the building sum or the size of the project.
In addition, take into account a handling time of up to eight weeks. This waiting time is sometimes longer in the case of monuments or deviating zoning plans. Take this waiting time into account when planning your project: the later you apply, the later you will start installing the external facade.
